CJ Renegade Spotters Guide

CJ Renegade Spotters Guide

a guide to identifying CJ Renegade Jeeps

Jeep started the Renegade option in 1970 on the CJ-5 model and continued it all the way to the end of the CJ series in 1986. Renegade models offered special options and decaling that set the Jeep off from the standard models.

Below is a year to year guide outlining the style and appearance of the Renegade decaling.

The first year Renegade

1971 - Renegade II

The Renegade II decal was very similar to the previous year and also featured the black stripe down the center of the hood.

1972-1973

This year Renegade decaling featured the center of the hood stripe and larger lettering down the sides of the hood.

1974-1975 (1st Half)

Similar to the previous years but added a 90 degree turn downward in front of the door area. The decal continued down over the Jeep logo and V8 emblem.

1975 (2nd Half) -1976

A complete redesign from prior years. Gone was the center hood stripe, this decal swooped over the hood. 1976 marks the introduction of the CJ-7 and changes to the rest of the CJ Jeeps. This includes a new frame and altered body tub.

1977-1978

The hood section was larger and the Renegade letters were separated and stood alone.

1979-1980

Back was the center hood stripe but added a yellow-orange/white-blue graduation. Renegade letters stood alone. Also featured graduated striping down the sides under the door.

1981-1982

Tri-colored stripe over the hood and down the sides under the door.

1983-1984

Center of the hood tri-colored stripe. Letters that were all capitalized and a side stripe that followed the upward curve of the front fender.

1985-1986

Center of the hood tri-colored stripe. Letters that were all capitalized and under the door stripe that followed the upward curve of the rear fender.
